# Azure Monitor MCP server for AI agents.

actionlake is an MCP gateway: one remote MCP server that connects Claude and other MCP clients to Azure Monitor and the rest of your systems. It gives your agent 122 Azure Monitor actions (74 reads, 30 writes and 18 that wait for a confirmation) and holds the Azure Monitor credential itself, so the agent never does. It paces Azure Monitor's limits and records every call.

[Connect Azure Monitor free](https://actionlake.com/console?start=sandbox) [See pricing](https://actionlake.com/pricing)

100,000 free calls a month. No card, no email, no password: press Start a free sandbox on the next screen and keep the key it shows you.

`claude mcp add --transport http actionlake https://connect.actionlake.com/mcp`

the first call

```
do {
  action: "azure_monitor.event_categories.list",
  intent: "check which Azure Monitor account is connected"
}
# Get the list of available event categories supported in the Activity Logs Service · read · 1 upstream call
```

- 122 actions in one signed file
- 74 read look, never change
- 30 write create and update
- 18 wait for a yes destructive, confirmed first

Set up

## Connect Azure Monitor in three steps.

1. 01
   ### Add actionlake to Claude.
   Run the command once in Claude Code; its consent page can create a free sandbox: 100,000 calls a month, no card. In the Claude app, add a custom connector with the URL below and paste your key on the consent page. Creating a new sandbox from the Claude app is not yet tested by us.
   `https://connect.actionlake.com/mcp`
2. 02
   ### Connect Azure Monitor.
   OAuth 2.0, client credentials. Paste the app's client id and secret; actionlake fetches and renews the token, and nobody has to sign in. actionlake stores what you paste write-only, sealed under your tenant's key.
   - `client_id` Entra application (client) id of a service principal with Monitoring Reader or Monitoring Contributor on the…
   - `client_secret` Entra client secret
   - `tenant_id` Your Azure Monitor tenant id
   ```
   account { op: "connections.requirements", service: "azure_monitor" }
   # free: exactly what to paste, and what is found for you
   ```
3. 03
   ### Make the first call. Check before a write.
   Ask in plain words; Claude picks the action. Before anything changes, `check` validates the call and prices it, for free.
   ```
   do    { action: "azure_monitor.event_categories.list" }
   # get the list of available event categories supported in the activity logs service · read · 1 upstream call
   check { action: "azure_monitor.metric_alerts.update", input: { … } }
   # free: inputs, permissions, cost and confirmations, nothing sent
   ```

Try it

## Prompts to paste into Claude.

Each one names the Azure Monitor actions it will call, so you know what it reads and what it changes before you send it.

1. Read read
   Get the list of available event categories supported in the Activity Logs Service in Azure Monitor and tell me what stands out.
   calls `azure_monitor.event_categories.list`
2. Write write
   Update an metric alert definition in Azure Monitor. Show me exactly what you will send before you save it.
   calls `azure_monitor.metric_alerts.update`

Governance for Azure Monitor

## Destructive actions wait for a yes.

18 Azure Monitor actions are destructive. These are all of them:

- Delete an alert rule definition `azure_monitor.metric_alerts.delete`
- Delete an action group `azure_monitor.action_groups.delete`
- Send test notifications to a set of provided receivers `azure_monitor.action_groups.create_notifications`
- Send test notifications to a set of provided receivers `azure_monitor.tenant_action_groups.create_notifications`
- Deletes the log profile `azure_monitor.log_profiles.delete`
- Deletes and autoscale setting `azure_monitor.autoscale_settings.delete`
- Delete an Activity Log Alert rule `azure_monitor.activity_log_alerts.delete`
- Deletes existing diagnostic settings for the specified resource `azure_monitor.diagnostic_settings.delete`
- Deletes an Azure Monitor PrivateLinkScope `azure_monitor.private_link_scopes.delete`
- Delete a tenant action group `azure_monitor.tenant_action_groups.delete`
- Deletes a data collection rule `azure_monitor.data_collection_rules.delete`
- Deletes a scheduled query rule `azure_monitor.scheduled_query_rules.delete`
- Deletes a data collection endpoint `azure_monitor.data_collection_endpoints.delete`
- Deletes a private endpoint connection with a given name `azure_monitor.private_endpoint_connections.delete`
- Deletes an Azure monitor scoped resource with a given name `azure_monitor.private_link_scoped_resources.delete`
- Deletes existing subscription diagnostic settings for the specified resource `azure_monitor.subscription_diagnostic_settings.delete`
- Deletes an association `azure_monitor.data_collection_rule_associations.delete`
- Deletes existing management group diagnostic settings for the specified resource `azure_monitor.management_group_diagnostic_settings.delete`

A destructive action runs only with `confirm: true`. Under the `human` policy the agent cannot confirm for itself: the run stops until a named person approves, in the console or from a signed link in an email. The cap on a key is refused before the call is sent, never after.

do azure_monitor.metric_alerts.delete confirm_policy: **human**

Delete an alert rule definition?

**intent:** the user asked me to delete an alert rule definition

run suspended · waiting for a named person · key _azure-monitor-agent_ cannot confirm itself

In the console, or from an emailed signed link.

a key for this connector

```
account {
  op: "keys.create", name: "azure-monitor-agent",
  allowed_actions: ["azure_monitor.*"], cap_calls: 2000,
  confirm_policy: "human_for_writes",
  approval_rules: [
    { match: "azure_monitor.metric_alerts.delete", approver: "lead@example.com" },
    { match: "azure_monitor.action_groups.delete", approver: "lead@example.com" },
    { match: "azure_monitor.action_groups.create_notifications", approver: "lead@example.com" }
Illustrative. Scoped to Azure Monitor only, capped at 2,000 upstream calls, every write confirmed, and the destructive ones approved by a named person.
Yes. actionlake is an MCP gateway: a remote MCP server that gives Claude, or another MCP client, 122 Azure Monitor actions across action groups, data collection endpoints, scheduled query rules and tenant action groups, through the same eight tools it uses for every other connector. actionlake is independent; it is not made or endorsed by Azure Monitor.
**What do I need to connect Azure Monitor?**
Entra application (client) id of a service principal with Monitoring Reader or Monitoring Contributor on the… and Entra client secret. Plus your tenant id. The free call account { op: "connections.requirements", service: "azure_monitor" } lists exactly what to paste.
**Can an AI agent delete or change things in Azure Monitor?**
Only if its key allows it, and only with an explicit confirmation. 18 Azure Monitor actions are destructive, including delete an alert rule definition, delete an action group and send test notifications to a set of provided receivers. Each runs only with confirm: true. Under the human confirm policy, or an approval rule on the key, the run waits until a named person approves it.
**Will an AI agent use up my Azure Monitor API limit?**
actionlake paces every call to the limits in the Azure Monitor service file: 200 calls a minute per connection. Repeated reads are answered from cache (73 Azure Monitor actions can be), which never reaches Azure Monitor.
**What does an Azure Monitor action cost?**
One upstream call, the only unit actionlake bills. A list that pages bills one call per page (35 Azure Monitor actions page). Cache hits, searches, dry runs and calls Azure Monitor refused with 401, 403, 429 or a 5xx are free. The Free plan includes 100,000 calls a month with no card. Paid plans start at US$49 a month for 250,000 calls, with overage from US$0.30 down to US$0.18 per 1,000.
**Which Azure Monitor API does it cover?**
The Azure Monitor (metrics, alert rules, action groups, activity log, diagnostic settings, data collection) API Azure Resource Manager Microsoft.Insights, one api-version per resource type: stable/2026-01-01/metricAlert.json (2026-01-01), stable/2026-01-01/activityLogAlerts_API.json (2026-01-01), stable/2026-03-01/scheduledQueryRule_API.json (2026-03-01), stable/2023-01-01/actionGroups_API.json (2023-01-01), preview/2023-05-01-preview/tenantActionGroups.json (2023-05-01-preview), stable/2024-02-01/metrics.json (2024-02-01), stable/2019-03-01/metricBaselines.json (2019-03-01), stable/2015-04-01/activityLogs.json (2015-04-01), preview/2021-05-01-preview/openapi.json (2021-05-01-preview), preview/2021-05-01-preview/subscriptionDiagnosticsSettings_API.json (2021-05-01-preview), preview/2021-05-01-preview/managementGroupDiagnosticSettings_API.json (2021-05-01-preview), stable/2022-10-01/autoScale.json (2022-10-01), stable/2024-03-11/dataCollection.json (2024-03-11), stable/2021-09-01/privateLinkScopes_API.json (2021-09-01), stable/2021-10-01/networkSecurityPerimeter.json (2021-10-01), stable/2016-03-01/logProfiles.json (2016-03-01), stable/2016-03-01/alertRulesIncidents.json (2016-03-01), preview/2018-11-27-preview/vmInsightsOnboarding.json (2018-11-27-preview), stable/2015-04-01/operations_API.json (2015-04-01) at management.azure.com. It is built from Azure Monitor's documentation as read on 22 October 2026. 122 actions in 33 areas, each one in the signed service file (version 1.0.0).
**Does actionlake keep my Azure Monitor data, and where?**
actionlake processes and stores data in Sydney, Australia; there is no US region yet. Reads may be cached for up to 5 minutes, and a write clears the reads it affects. Each run's request and response is kept, sealed, for your plan's trace window: 1 day on Free, 3 days on Starter, 7 days on Pro, 14 days on Team, 30 days on Business and 30 days on Enterprise. Your Azure Monitor credential is sealed under your tenant's key, never logged and never returned. Your traffic is not used to train models.
**Which AI clients can use it?**
Claude Code, tested by us end to end, and the Claude app as a custom connector, tested by us with an existing key. Other MCP clients that support remote servers over Streamable HTTP (MCP revisions 2025-06-18 and 2025-11-25) and OAuth dynamic client registration, or a bearer header, should connect the same way; we have not tested them. Or plain REST, under the same action names.
